What is the “Rule of 3” and Why Does It Matter for Your Online Business?
Well hey there and welcome to another episode of the Mama Business Podcast. I’m your host, Sarah Brumley, and if this is your first time joining me, then I just want to say welcome! My entire goal with this podcast is to help you simplify and clarify your online marketing strategy strategy so that you can attract and serve your ideal clients. It doesn’t have to be complicated in order to be successful, so if you are looking for simple, if you’re looking for effective – then you are in the right place. And if you’ve been around for awhile, welcome back. I’m glad to have you along for the journey.
Whether you are first starting out in online business or have been in business awhile, it can be challenging to determine what type of strategy to use to be successful. There are tons and tons and tons of platforms, programs, and systems that you can implement at any given point. But does that mean that they will work for you? Not necessarily.
And don’t get me wrong, it’s not the platforms or the systems that are the problem – it’s the lack of understanding of why you need that platform and how you will use it to build the business of your dreams.
Think about it like building a house. You don’t start by installing wood floors and hanging pictures on the walls, right? That’s decor. No. You start by designing a foundation that the entire structure of the house can sit on. Without that foundation, the house itself will remain unstable and ultimately will not be able to be successful long-term. Right? The same thing is true for your online business strategy. If you start by implementing systems and platforms before you have a foundation in place, you won’t be successful because those systems will be scattered and will likely result in failure or the need for a complete overhaul in the future.
Today and over the next few weeks, I want to really focus in on helping you understand the foundational elements of an successful online marketing strategy. By doing so, I know that this is going to give you the freedom and flexibility to create your own strategy and implement systems and automations that actually work for you. I know this is effective because these are the same foundational elements that I address with each and every client of mine and it’s the same strategy that I’ve personally used to grow my own successful business.
So, without further ado, I want to get right into what I call my “Rule of 3” – and explain the foundational elements that every online business needs. Then, over the next few weeks we’re going to dig deeper into how to actually apply this within your online business.
Foundational Element #1: Attraction
The first foundational element that every online business needs is “Attraction”.
So, let’s pretend you run a weight loss coaching business. This is foundation that you put into place so that Jane, a woman that desperately wants to lose 50 pounds, is attracted to you, your business, your cause and wants to know more.
How does that happen? How does she come to know that you exist? You have to know the strategy that you will use to attract Jane prior to choosing and implementing systems to actually do so. Don’t allow this to be a guessing game as to how she will come to know you. When you do that, you end up in a spot where the rest of your business will start to crumble under the weight of no new clients.
So, first thing we have to figure out: our attraction strategy.
Foundational Element #2: Nurture
The second foundational element is “Nurture”.
This is the strategy that you put into place in order for you to take Jane from “just interested” to “truly understanding what you offer and how you can serve her”.
Obviously this foundational element is not necessary if we haven’t already put the “attraction” strategy into play, but once we have, it’s critical to know exactly how you are going to nurture Jane so that she understands why she should choose to work with you.
I’ve talked about this before that it takes between 8-12 touch points or interactions with you in order for a potential client to choose to pay you money and actually work with you. So, what’s the strategy going to be? How will you create that nurturing environment so that Jane can’t wait to become a client?
Foundational Element #3: Service + Retention
Last and finally, the third foundation element is a combination of service and retention. I lump these two together because I really believe that it is easier to keep a client or have that same client become a repeat client then it is to get new clients. So, our goal in this foundational stage is to provide the best and most consistent service we possibly can across the board.
At this point Jane has moved into the paying client realm. She’s excited to engage your services and she can’t wait to get those results. How do you get them for her? How do you serve her at this moment and also serve your other clients as well? How do you maintain consistency so that they can’t wait to refer you to their friends and family? Not to mention, how are you going to do all of this without feeling overwhelmed or like you are recreating the wheel each and every time?
There’s a strategy that’s critical here and without it, you’ll likely find yourself floundering, overwhelmed, or throwing random systems into play that aren’t actually effective.
So, we have to know this strategy. And once again, I’m just going to remind you that I’m just giving you these foundation elements at a very high level – this is just an overview. We are going to dig deep over the next few weeks so that you know the answers to these questions and so that you can then choose the systems that will give you the best results in carrying out that strategy. Okay?
It shouldn’t be complicated. In fact it should be so simple that you wonder if you could really be on the right track to success. But it does take this deep work to get that “simplicity” that “clarity” into place so that you can be successful long-term. Alrighty?
What’s Your Strategy?
And that brings us to the action part of this episode. And we all know that action is where the dreams turn into the reality. And today’s action step is this:
ACTION: I really just want you to give it some thought. Obviously we are going dig deeper into this and we will be able to take really specific action going forward, but I want you to consider the things that you already have in place in your business. Are they built on a foundation or just thrown together to get you through the moment? If you are anything like the majority of my clients, you want a business that succeeds long-term. And that comes with making sure that you have a solid foundational strategy in place so that the systems and automations you implement actually work to accomplish what you’ve set out to do.
So, click subscribe if you haven’t already so that you don’t miss an episode going forward and know that I’m cheering you on! You’ve got this. Have an amazing day and I’ll chat with you again next time.
