3 Reasons Your Business Needs a Blog

Well, hey there! I’m Sarah Brumley of brumleymarketing.com and, as always, I’m so excited that you’re here with me today as we chat about why you need a blog for your mama business.

I just have to say that blogging is one of my favorite things. It was and continues to be one of the most important ways that I’ve grown my business over the years, and it provides so many benefits that I can’t wait to share with you.

Is a Blog for You?

Before we jump into the nitty gritty of this episode, though, I want to quash the idea that if you don’t like to write, a blog isn’t for you. Because, chances are you are sharing information with your potential clients in other ways. So, when I refer to a blog in this episode, I’m talking about, yes – a traditional blog that’s typed out and added to your website, but also I’m including things like a Vlog – or video trainings – that you add to your site with a transcript. Another option could be a podcast. In my case, while I do write traditional blog posts, most of my blog feed has these episodes, linked with a transcript and some links to additional resources. And no, you don’t have to write out those transcripts by hand. You can definitely use one of the many transcription services out there or hire someone to help you with this.

All that to say, yes you can have a blog and not be a writer.

What is a Blog?

Let’s talk a little bit about what a blog is. In it’s simplest form, a blog is a series of articles or other pieces of content that are shared on a website on a regular basis and include a minimum of 300 words. These articles tend to be shared anywhere from once per day to once per month, depending on the purpose of the blog and the business priorities.

Knowing that, let’s jump into the reasons you absolutely should have a blog for your business. And the first reason is that a blog helps your SEO.

Reason #1: A Blog Helps Your SEO

Put simply, SEO is the process of helping your website get free, passive traffic month after month. Did you catch that?

FREE traffic.

PASSIVE traffic.

MONTH AFTER MONTH.

That means that once you’ve done the work of creating a blog post, it does the work for you going forward. Who doesn’t want that?

Now, I frequently get a couple of question about this, the first being: “But, why do I need a blog to do this? Can’t my basic website pages work for me and get me that free passive traffic?”

And the answer is yes, they can, but only if they are addressing the exact question that a potential client would ask in their search bar. The benefit of having a blog is that you introduce additional content that you wouldn’t find elsewhere on your website, making it more likely you will show up in search. Why? Because Google will see you as an expert. Additionally, when you post new content consistently – which a blog allows you to do, your website is continually brought to the attention of Google, and that gives your whole website a boost in authority – not just the blog post you wrote. Essentially, it’s like the teacher telling you that you get additional credit for showing up to class everyday.

Did you know that search engines provide over 50% of all web traffic? I don’t know about you, but knowing that having a blog can help me get that much FREE and PASSIVE traffic is totally worth making it a priority.

The second question I get is, “I get lots of traffic from the things I share on social media, so why should I bother with a blog?”

Well, for two reasons.

First, social media post have a short lifespan and typically are only shared with a fraction of your followers. That means that you are working all of the time to remain top of mind on social media. Those posts don’t do the work for you – you do the work, over and over and over again. Miss a day of posting? Your traffic will slow down. It’s certainly not passive.

Second, how about the fact that Google drives eight times more traffic than all of the social media platforms combined? EIGHT TIMES MORE TRAFFIC. So, you can definitely choose not to have a blog, but you risk leaving a LOT of revenue on the table.

I don’t know about you, but those alone are great reasons to have a blog for your business.

But that’s not all. Let’s discuss reason number two that you should have a blog for your business and that’s because a blog helps you build trust with your potential client.

Reason #2: A Blog Builds Trust With Your Potential Client

No matter where you are in your business or personal life, when you need help solving a problem – you want to know you can trust that the product you purchase or the service provider you hire is going to be the right solution for you.

A blog allows you, as the business owner, to answer those questions. To share experiences and results that other clients and customers have received. To provide education. And most importantly, to connect and position yourself and your company as an authority on the matter.

They want the expert. The expert they can trust. And a blog is a great way to show them you are that expert. That you are trustworthy.

You become the solution to the problem. And that’s what they want.

Here’s the deal. You are knowledgeable in your industry, right? If you weren’t you wouldn’t be in business and you definitely wouldn’t be successful. Even if you offer a service that seems really standard or simple, your clients hire because you have the expertise to perform that service.

Used properly, a blog shows that expertise. You can answer commonly asked questions, show customer results, convey best practices, and so much more through a blog, so even if your customer isn’t ready to purchase just yet, he or she will remember the small results they got from you and come back when they are ready.

The flip side of this is that when you don’t have a blog or a method to share that expertise, then your ideal clients and customers will be running to your competition. They will see their results in search engines, find the answers to their questions, and purchase from them. Why? Because your competition will be seen as the expert and you will be nowhere in sight.

Harsh…but it’s true. And such a great reason to have a blog. So, what questions are your potential clients or customers asking? It’s time to answer them.

…and that brings us to reason number three to have a blog and that’s because a blog inspires potential clients and customers to take action.

Reason #3: A Blog Inspires Your Reader to Take Action

Think about the static website pages you have. Likely a home page, an about page, a contact page and maybe a page where people can find out more about your services. Each of those pages likely has a call to action on it. And if it doesn’t, it should! On the contact page, you want someone to fill out the form. On the services page, you want someone to get on a call with you. On the home page, it might be a click to learn more about your services. Whatever it is, you are pointing your potential customer or client to the next step they need to take.

Having a blog is no exception to this. In fact, each blog post provides you the opportunity to get potential clients and customers on your email list, offer them a discount so they make a purchase, or give them additional ways to connect with you, among other things. And all of those offers come while they are getting the answers to their questions and AFTER they’ve begun to trust you. Your calls to action can be as simple as pointing them to another resource or blog post that might further their education, sending them to look at other experiences your clients’ have had, or recommending that they jump on a call with you to discuss their service needs. These CTAs can be tailored to the individual blog post as well, so that someone coming to you for gutter cleaning isn’t going to be jumping on a call with you about your roofing services.

Remember, just because someone lands on your website doesn’t mean that they are ready to purchase from you at that very moment. That’s okay. While the numbers are different for each business, it takes between 8-10 touchpoint to close a sale. That’s eight times your potential client interacts with you from the time that they know of your existence until they give up their hard earned money.

And while Google search is passive and free traffic, you certainly don’t want them walking way without giving them the opportunity to take action. So, offer them your email list in exchange for a coupon code or a free resource and suddenly you have the ability to communicate with them more. Offer them additional resources in the form of blog posts or consultations. Whatever it is, blog posts allow you to capitalize on free and passive traffic and encourage your reader to take action – thus increasing the likelihood that he or she will make a purchase now or in the future.

Your Business DOES Need a Blog

So, let’s recap the three reasons your business needs a blog.

  1. A Blog Helps Your SEO
  2. A Blog Builds Trust With Your Potential Client
  3. A Blog Inspires Your Reader to Take Action

…and trust me, there are many more reasons.

Take Action: Start That Blog Today

And that brings us to the action part of this episode. I’m a huge proponent of taking action, because action is where the dreams turn into the reality. And that’s why every Mama Business episode comes with action steps you can take immediately to up level your mama life and business.

You guessed it, today’s action step is the following:

If you don’t have a blog already, get that blog started. Don’t overthink it…just do it. Because the benefits of having one are too great to ignore. It’s really just a three-step process:

  1. Think about one question your potential clients or customers have asked and answer it.
  2. Add a clear call to action.
  3. Post it to your blog.

Lastly, make a plan to update your blog either once a week or once a month. Obviously the more frequently you post, the quicker you’ll have results in search engines, but choose whatever you know you can stick with.

If you do have a blog – take some time this week and go back through all of your blog posts and make sure you have those calls to action in place. After all, you’d hate to waste the benefit of having free and passive traffic by not telling your reader what to do next!

I know from personal experience that I am more likely to accomplish what I set out to do if I am accountable to someone. So DM me on Instagram at sarahlbrumley and share your first blog post. Trust me, I want to see it so that I can cheer you on throughout the process. Because, mama, I am cheering you on.
