How to Design a Marketing Strategy That Works for YOUR Business
Well hey there and welcome to this episode of the Mama Business podcast. I’m so glad you’re joining me today for this conversation.
And I don’t know about you, but I’m constantly finding myself in a place where the conversations I’ve had with everyone in a given time period are all about one topic and this week was absolutely no different. And maybe that’s because once I’ve heard it from one person, then I’m even more in tune to the struggle when the next person brings it up, but I know when that happens that I’m meant to share it with you as well!
So, here goes!
This week’s struggle for mama business owners has been centered around this feeling that they were doing all the things but feeling stressed out because either nothing was working OR they didn’t know what was working.
And, while we were able to clarify their individual situations in our 1:1 work together, I want to take just a few moments today to chat about creating a marketing strategy within your business that actually works for you. Because your marketing strategy should not feel hard or unmanageable or overwhelming. And if it does – it’s not being done right. Okay?
Okay.
So, a successful marketing strategy really comes down to having three things in place to create a foundation that you can build on for the life of your business.
Step #1: Long-Form Content
The first thing you need to have in place is some form of long-form content. This is content that’s searchable – either on Google or other platforms and can include a blog, podcast, or even video content, like a YouTube channel. Yes, this takes a little to get off the ground, but once you have it in place, with a clear plan for consistency, offering value, and adding calls to action, then you’ll see a huge return on investment long-term.
Because the coolest part of this type of content is that it lives on in an Evergreen way. Meaning that someone could search years from now and come across the information you’ve provided, as well as your offer to serve them with your paid service or product.
In the case of my own family finance blog, I’m no longer active with blogging there, but I have over 300 blog posts on my site. And, you know what? I get thousands of visitors each and every month due to search. And – I have paid products and a membership there that makes me passive income.
Awesome, right?
So, if you want to have a successful, long-term marketing strategy in place – you have to start with some form of long-form content and you can check out episodes 4, 15 and 19 for more information about how to get started with this.
Step #2: Email Marketing
The second thing you need to have in place is an email marketing platform that allows you to collect warm leads (you know – those people that can’t wait to hear from you). When you have this in place, you’ll be able to show up weekly with value – maybe in the form of the link to your podcast episode or your blog post – and then when you have a paid offer, they’ll be the first ones to purchase. These are your biggest fans and they’ve given you permission to show up in their inbox. In fact, they WANT you to.
So, this is a must have if you want to have a marketing foundation that doesn’t leave you doing “all the things”.
And if you want more information about how to get this off the ground, you’ll want to check out episodes 28, 29, and 54.
Step #3: Home Base
The third thing you need to have in place in order to have a successful marketing foundation is a home base or website.
And here’s the hard truth. If you want to grow a reputable online business this is a non-negotiable. Not only is a website an asset you own (remember, you don’t own your social media platforms), but it’s where your potential clients and customers can come to learn more about you, your offer, and get value from the content you provide through your blog or podcast.
Now, I will say that I ALWAYS recommend a website for every business type, however I understand the merits of a handcrafted goods business utilizing Etsy or a similar type of platform to get their sales off the ground. That’s a fine starting place, but within a year, you should still be considering a website – even if your sales page is redirected to Etsy or elsewhere because you will be creating long-form content, right? And that needs a place to live as well!

Create Your Marketing Strategy that Works for Business Growth
So, the three things you need to create a foundation that you can build on for the life of your business are:
- Long-form content
- Email marketing
- Home base or website
Are these the only things you’ll ever do to grow your business? Probably not. But without this foundation, everything else you do will feel scattered and out of sorts. Because you won’t have the foundation you need to build on. So, get these three things in place before you move on to ANYTHING else.
And that brings us to the action part of this episode. I’m a huge proponent of taking action, because action is where the dreams turn into the reality.
ACTION: Determine where your foundation is lacking. Are you missing one of these three critical components? If so, it’s time to focus on that piece. Because, the sooner you do, the sooner you grow in a way that doesn’t leave you feeling overwhelmed or doing random things in hopes that you’ll find success.
And if you aren’t quite sure where to start with any of this, head to sarahbrumley.com/strategy to grab a Mama Business Strategy Session with me. We’ll come up with the exact next steps for you to take to design your marketing strategy and grow that online business as a busy mama.
